- Cook the noodles:
Boil until tender, drain, and set aside with a touch of oil to prevent sticking. - Caramelize the cabbage:
Heat oil/butter in a large skillet. Add onion (if using) and cook until soft. Add shredded cabbage and sprinkle with sugar. SautĂ© slowly over medium heat, stirring often, for 20â30 minutes until cabbage is soft, golden, and slightly caramelized. Season generously with salt and black pepper. - Mix & warm through:
Add the cooked noodles to the pan, toss everything together, and cook another 2â3 minutes until heated through and flavors meld.

- Traditional Hungarian homes enjoy it as-is, but some add a little cracked pepper or even a touch of paprika.
- Want a twist? Add crumbled bacon or serve with a dollop of sour cream.
